The occasion: God Parents in town from Switzerland
My husband sends me a text on Friday, mid day saying we are gong to dinner with the Thomets tonight. And I said ok, where…now think quickly. We need a child friendly place with good food easily accessible by public transportation. So I quickly settled on Scottadito. Their tag line is “Traditional Tuscan cuisine committed to serving dishes made with ingredients sustainably grown, harvested, and sourced”. In addition to serving sustainable foods they have a nice outdoor stone garden with a gold fishpond, small waterfall and bamboo. Perfect for a curious child.
We were seated right on the edge of the garden, which enabled the adults to sit and talk while my son walked around near by. I quickly order muscles for my son so he would have something to eat while we all decided. I ended up eating the majority of the muscles, which were perfectly done with garlic and fresh tomato. I know the pasta is really good and home made (I ate here the night before the 2010 NYC Marathon) but wanted to branch out. I settled on a mixed green salad and the soft shell crab special. The salad was fine; a bit over dressed for my taste but still good. The crab special was also quite good. The crab was lightly battered and pa- fried then served over braised chard. The juxtaposition was nice; crispy outside with a hint of the sea followed by a tender soft mild inside. My only complaint was I found it to be a bit salty, but then again, I rarely cook with salt.
At the end of the night we all declined desert has they serve handsome portions. Our server brought us complementary panna cotta and limoncello, which served as nice end to a nice evening. I will be sure to return but next time I want to try their brunch!
